Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma has stated that his government has not entered into any agreement with any foreign company for what he calls domination in solid waste management services.
Ranguma announced that he has ordered investigations into the allegations of a German Company being awarded the contract and its capacity to manage it throughout the county without focusing into the city garbage alone.
He says two of his officers have been suspended to allow for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Addressing Kisumu County Assembly members, Ranguma says he recognizes solid waste as a major concern for the Kisumu County and he would want the residents to get a fare deal into the contract.
He announced that his office has received several local and foreign companies seeking interest to provide solid waste management services but majority of them are seeking monopoly status that his office is not comfortable with.
The governor says his government has opted to pursue a policy for Integrated Sustainable Waste Management that will across the entire county.
“The entire sub county must be considered on how they will be incorporate in this waste management issue and us as leaders we should forget our political differences to develop.”
Ranguma says under the Kisumu Urban Project, there is a component of solid waste management and has directed the team to urgently address the Kachok dumpsite that has remained an eyesore.
The issue of solid waste management has remained controversial with Nyando MP Fred Outa spearheading it maintaining it must go on.
The county assembly Chief Whip Isaiah Onyango says there is need to call all the warring parties on the waste management.
Isiah says the issue will divide the assembly and must be addressed with a matter of urgency.
He said this following a faction allied to the governor has said that members who visited the germen did not carry with them a technical officer who could advise them on the waste management as required.
