Nyanza Open Tennis Championship concludes with top ranked Nyanza tennis champion, Aditya Jaiswal from Kisumu Senior Academy winning the coveted men’s tennis championship. Jaiswal rallied past Samuel Oduor Sande 6-2 in a thrilling final, to emerge top in the round robin group with 24 points.
The tournament which was organized by the Nyanza Lawn Tennis Association after a month long tennis camp that saw over 50 participants from across the country battle it out for the medals and other prizes available.
Second place went to Samuel Sande who bagged 21 point while Dennis Mabiria emerged 3rd with 17 points. Kevin Juma & Khalifa Khalid followed in position 4 and 5 respectively with 12 & 9 points.
Ricky Omondi took the boys 18 & Under Category with 19 points, followed by Dickens Wanyonyi of Kisumu Boys High School who finished with 16 points. Upset of the day saw John Onyango from Kisumu Day High School rally from 3 games down to beat Dickens 6-4 in an entertaining match, however, this could only ensure he settle for the third slot.
In the boys 14 & Under Category tournament, home favorite Shandeep Jaiswal from Kisumu Junior Academy defeated David Amata from Kosawo Primary School 4-0 to ensure that he collected all 12 points on offer, Amata came in second with 8 points while Phelix Onyango from Joel Omino Primary School followed closely with 7 Point and lastly in this category Kevin Juma from Joel Omino primary came in a distance fourth.
The much awaited boys 12 & Under Category saw Samson Ochieng from Xaverian Primary School emerge top in the knockout draw, dispatching Enoch Omongo 4-2, 4-1 in a thrilling final to take the gold medal. Ashley Sinclair also from Xaverian came in third. Isaac Kadenge triumph over Rafael Ouma with 10 – 7 to win the boys 10 & under. Third place went to John Leslie from Xaverian.
In the girl’s events, Monica Werimo won the girls 16 & Under Category, 14 & Under Category was won by Roshni Shundeep Raichura from Nairobi Kenton College Preparatory School. Roshni had 15 points while Simar Virdee from Braeburn School Kisumu followed closely with 11 points. Mangwi Emilda Adamu from Jalaram Academy was third with 9 points while Valary Akinyi from Highway High School settle for a fourth place.
In the Girls 12 & Under Category, Cassandra Nikita from Aga Khan primary beat Faith Nallec from Joel Omino primary School in straight sets, 4-1, 4-3 to take the gold medal while Ashley Kemunto from Xaverian Primary beat compatriot Tess Muendi to lift the bronze medal.
Girls 10 & Under Category saw two groups merged to spice up the event, Diya Shundeep from Nairobi, Kenton College Preparatory School won group A, Ryana Okoyo from Aga Khan Primary School & Viola Amondi from Xaverian came in second and third respectively while Kristina Staussi from Braeburn School won the girls 10 & under group B category. Tess Muendi and Nawal Salim from Aga Khan Primary were second and third.
