New Koyango Market, a Community Based Organization in Manyatta Koyango market have launched a weekly market clean up exercise which they say have been health hazard to them and to their businesses in that market.
Chairman Mourice Ogola said they are doing the cleaning after the County Council Market cleaners have reverted not to clean and sweep the market but continue to collect the revenue over there.
We are surprised by the manner in which County Council Workers have ignored to clean up this market while they come to collect taxes daily
The cleaners who consisted of traders and the group members paraded in both side of the market sweeping and removing the wastes from the tunnels which blocks water from flowing and also in the corridors where they have been dumped.
The County Government recently launched county clean up exercise to ensures that the city remains clean but we are surprise they don’t have even a single dust bins in this area to dump the garbage we have collected, says Mary Atieno a Market Trader
They also appealed to the well wishers who can come to their aid to help by providing some of the tools and protective gears to help them not to contract any diseases which might be related to the king of work they are now engaging in.
We a peal to these corporate and any agency to come to our aid and help us get protective gears like gloves, gum boots, spade, and even wheel barrow to help in this work that we have resolve to do every Friday of the week, said Ogola.
Traders in the market also expressed their joy to see the garbage which has been threatening their business removed.
I am are very happy to see this lot of garbage removed, it has affected my business for by customers fearing to come and buy my goods fearing that the flies have breaded on them, said Rehema Abdala a Market Trader.
This comes after Kisumu County Assembly Majority Leader Samwel Ong’ow accused the Executive Member for Environment Rhoda Ahonobadha of failing to clean up the markets.
He said garbage is piling up in the markets have not been cleaned for many months posing a health risk to traders. Ong’ow threatened to institute impeachment motion against Ahonobadha within seven days unless she launches an emergency clean-up exercise of Kisumu Town and involve all stakeholders.
He also blamed lack of structures by the environment department for the collapse of the monthly clean up initiative.
