Community Health personnel across the counties this month have received a shocker from the government after they were provided with varying special salaries for the month ending June 2014
According to some of the community health workers who will remain anonymous for purposes of protection they have received varying special salaries across the counties that is not enough to take care of even there daily needs given previously they received a meager KES18,650 as there contractual dues for duties that include organizing sensitizing communities for uptake of quality health services; managing common ailments and minor injuries at community level; tracing defaulters to ensure compliance with health interventions such as immunization, tuberculosis treatment, malaria control, antiretrovirals, malnutrition, antenatal care; conducting community health diagnosis and recommending suitable interventions; referring health cases to appropriate health facilities; coordinating community health activities, workers and committees; monitoring, evaluating and preparing community health reports; facilitating planning activities at community level; mobilizing the community and other stakeholders; advocating and mobilizing resources for community health activities; and facilitating, training and developing community health volunteers/workers and members of community health committees.
Given the numerous duties required by the government to be conducted by the community health workers I dare say this is a raw deal.

They also said that Devolution which was meant to fasten the process for health worker has not made matters easy for the them having to contend with issues of approval and acceptance across the country.
To name but a few of the affected counties, Kakamega County received their normal monthly salary for June while Mombasa received a reviewed salary of KSH 55,637 up from 18,650.Other counties which include Narok ,Kisumu, Nairobi, received the said special salary of KES1,375, KES1,275, KES4,500 respectively.
The community health workers questioned the difference in the payment package for community health workers across the country, querying the essence of paying them peanuts as special salary under such grueling economical environment.
The said community health workers who have a revised scheme of service approved in April 2012 by the public service board said they were promised a transition process void of complications by the government and hoped that the responsible county governments could hasten the process to ensure community health workers do not suffer due to extended bureaucracy of the responsible officers bearers.
