Bondo sub county Social Development Officer Mr. Stephen Omwenga has instructed Self Help Groups (SHG) registered by the department of social services development to always involve his office in the election of their office bearers as required by the law.
Mr. Omwenga stated that it is only his office that has powers to preside over elections done by SGH or Community Based Organization (CBO) for legitimacy of office bearers.
He also pointed out that the involvement of his office during the election of the CBOs officials is important when it comes to dispute resolution especially with regards to finances which is common with many groups.
Mr. Omwenga disclosed that currently there are over 6,000 registered SHGs and CBOs in the entire sub county but only 10% of them are active.
He was speaking in West Migwena sub-location where he presided over the election of Nembele CBO and stated that those who do not adhere to the required procedure risk losing their certificates of registration.
Omwenga on the other hand advised individuals in the community to form and register SHGs and CBOs through which they can initiate and manage projects to improve their social economic livelihoods.
He appealed to the community to support those who were elected to office in the management of the water project funded by the European Union through a local NGO known as Participatory Research and Development Project (PARADEP).
