CSAKENYA ENGAGE KISII MCAs FOR YOUTH FRIENDLY HEALTH POLICIES

The Centre for the Study of Adolescence Kenya engaged the Kisii Members of County Assembly with a purpose to find a solution to the disturbing increase in dilapidated adolescent health and education in the county.

The meeting held at the Nyakoe Hotel in Kisii, brought several County Assembly Members including the Chairman of Budget and Appropriation Committee Hon. Dennis Ombachi, Hon. Lucy and Nancy both members of the Health Committee, Hon. Christine Karemi, Hon. Felister the Youth, Gender and People with Disability Representative and several other community and youth groups.

CSAKenya’s alarming statistics showed Nyanza growing prevalence to HIV/AIDs increasing to 16 percent with Kisumu taking a large chunk at 19 percent and Kisii at 9 percent.

According to Mallen Makone – County Nursing Officer Kisii, the serious lack of very necessary family planning contraceptives including condoms is a clear indicator that we need such trainings and seminars to develop bills and policies that will change how health is run in the county.

CSAKenya engages Kisii MCAs for Youth Friendly Policies

The Project Officer CSA Bungoma, Mr. Abrahams Simiyu indicated the need to have proper guidelines and policies to grow and develop the adolescent youth.

After much needed discussion and deliberation the Centre for the Study of Adolescence Program Officer Advocacy and Networking Mrs. Helen Owino called to action the Members of County Assembly to come up with Youth Friendly Policies that will position education and health services for improved adolescent health.

Some of the deliberation accepted and acknowledged by the Kisii Members of County Assembly included:

• Promotion of the establishment of Youth Friendly Health Services
• Specific Sexual Reproductive Health Resource Allocation with a focus on Adolescent Health
• Draft and pass bills that can facilitate accelerated access to Sexual Reproductive Health Information and Services

The Chair of the Budget and Appropriation Committee Hon. Dennis Ombachi supported the call to actions that were debated and said he would support it in the floor of the house. He also urged the Honorable Members of the County Assembly to support the Pesa Mashinani drive saying the counties need more money.
