Milwaukee security firm Hold Security reveal Russian Hackers theft of over a billion usernames and passwords from more than 400, 000 websites. Hold Security in this discovery claims that some of these sites that were compromised are still insecure meaning that they can be hit again.
To prevent this we as Kisumu News will guide you through a few tips that will help you protect yourself from hackers online. Digital Security not only involves the protection of a computer’s internet account and files from intrusion by an outside user as in Internet Security but also your digital information as present on all your digital devices, like smartphones, iPods, tablets, digital cameras and more.
Achieving Digital Security is not rocket science. It is all about common sense; it is common sense not to leave your mobile phone, laptop or any other digital device or gadget unattended. This will prevent prying users from easily accessing information on these devices. It is also common sense to use passwords, pass codes on your digital devices, this prevents people from accessing your information if at all you forget your phone or misplace. I am not encouraging people to misplace their password protected devices.
The following are some common sense tips on how to protect yourself from hackers:
It is better to be safe than sorry. Always assume that your information has been stolen. The Russian hack attack is very big and a great number of personal information was compromised. Hold Security has not revealed the websites affected and therefore it is safe to assume that you might have been compromised. You need to improve your online security by changing your password at least once a month and using strong passwords.
As stated above you need to lock out the attackers as soon as possible and the way to do this is by changing your password immediately and quite often because these data breaches are very frequent nowadays.
Changing and creating strong passwords can be quite tasking especially remembering all these different passwords for the different online services you subscribe to. To help you out you can use password managers like LastPass, Password Safe, or KeepPass which are excellent tiny programs that can save you a headache remembering that 40 character password.
Password managers help you create strong passwords and save them in a database for the different sites you access. The password managers databases are protected using a master password. Password manager make it easy to create strong passwords which can not be easily decoded by the tools these malicious hackers use.
Better still, you can use anagrams from sentences or quotes you love and use them as your password.
For example, the sentence One time in class I ate some glue could become 1TiC!AsG.
For sites that contain sensitive information like your bank details, social security numbers et cetera you need to use very strong passwords.
Security serious companies have already implemented two factor authentication security. Sites like Google , Apple, Yahoo, Facebook have implemented two factor authentication. Two factor authentication offers extra security features like mobile verification. If you have not enabled these security features and use any of the above sites then you need to enable them.
Unfortunately, you cannot but you can make it very difficult for the hackers to gain access to your information. And by applying some little common sense when handling your digital devices and your internet security will go a long way to prevent these attacks.
