DISABLED PERSONS NOW WANT 5% OF COUNTY BUDGETS

The 47 County Governments across the country have been asked to set aside at least 5% of their budgetary allocations towards supporting issues of people with disability.

The National Council for Persons with Disability Kisumu Regional Coordinator Mr. George Odhiambo has stated that that is the only way through which issues of disability will be addressed effectively.
He stated that due to the limited resources they have, it may not be easy for them as NCPWDs to effectively address the plight of persons with disability all over the country hence the need for county governments to also take it upon themselves to supplement the National government’s efforts.

We normally get limited funds that cannot help to address all these issues which affect the disabled persons in Kenya, we need these county government to come into our aid to give in even five percent of their budget to this kitty for effective operation said regional coordinator George Odhiambo

The Coordinator who was speaking at Matibabu Foundation Hospital in Ugenya sub-county during the launch of a disabled persons friendly playground that has been constructed in the institution courtesy of a Belgium team through a programme called Community Based Rehabilitation in Practice. The Belgium team CEO Dr. Wouter De Groote who was present at the function revealed that through the programme, they support three sub-counties including Ugenya, Ugunja and Siaya where they provide education to children with epilepsy and give physiotherapy to children who are not able to walk.

Dr. Wouter added that under the same programme, this year they built three disability friendly playgrounds in the county, one at Matibabu foundation, another one at Simenya health center and the third one at Malanga health center, to improve the livelihood of children with disability.

Siaya County assembly representative for disabled persons Ms Margaret Adhiambo Okech, who graced the occasion, welcomed the move and challenged the county government of Siaya to embrace and support the project so that its impact can be realized effectively.
