I listened keenly to my ward rep Eddy Phiaton yester night on Radio Ramogi as he sought to clear the air over the waste management debacle in Kisumu. While I wish to declare my support for the German project so long as thorny issues impeding its implementation can be ironed out including having regard and respect for Governor Jack Ranguma as the president of Kisumu County, I must say Eddy lost a great opportunity to disseminate objective information the people needed not only on the crisis that is Waste management but also what he is doing as a leader to alleviate the dire situation of Kisumu.
First, he went on the offensive disparaging all the elected leaders opining how he is the only one performing and therefore overwhelmed by public expectations. And when put to task over what he has done in fulfilling his promises he had the audacity to say that he has been conducting harambees all over and that he is doing so much that other leaders are afraid he will take over their positions!
I remember well during the campaigns and the promises you made to the people of Market Milimani ward and be it known to all that the Ward represents the face of Kisumu more than any Ward and that presently it presents Kisumu with the greatest challenges of planning, control of informal trade and transport etc. These challenges cannot be overcome through narrow opposition activism. Instead it calls for synergies and collaboration throughout the leadership chain. Eddy therefore needs Ken Obura as the area MP, Ranguma as the Governor and a host of other leaders if he hopes to fulfill just half of his mandate.
Finally, it should not be forgotten that to be elected or to happen to ascend into leadership position is an event but to take charge of that position for social and economic actualization is a process that requires magnanimity, humility, true concern for the plight of your subjects and collaborative efforts among other virtues.
Otherwise you might find yourself in the weighing scale of leadership and having been found wanting, you get your Kingdom taken away from you.
