Is this the car to make you take Infiniti seriously? The new Infiniti QX30 concept car will star at the Geneva Motor Show and it looks very in keeping with the spirit of the time, as car enthusiasts flock to the junior crossover segment.
A first look at the QX30 Infiniti Car, you immediately see that it is a spun off the Q30 hatchback concept – the warm-up act to this autumn’s new 2015 production hatchback, expected to arrive in show rooms later this year.
The family is based on the MFA front-wheel drive architecture from partner brand Mercedes-Benz. So expect much of the tech to be similar to what you’ll find underneath an A-class.
This Infiniti Car sits slightly higher than the Infiniti Q30 hatch concept by 30mm. Its styling looks well resolved, and is more attuned to European tastes than some of the larger, more lumbering SUVs Infiniti sells around the world. An FX is designed primarily for California, not Clacton.
Will it go anywhere? Surely not. Infiniti is a lifestyle brand and about as far removed from mud-plugging as is imaginable.
The Infiniti QX30 Design Director Alfonso Albaisa had this to say about this Infiniti Car:
We wanted the spontaneous fluidity of the QX30 concept design to cut through the urban clutter and rigidity, reflecting its go-anywhere and spur-of-the-moment nature. ‘The QX30 concept has been designed to make occupants feel safe and protected inside, and customers can drive in or out of the city without worrying about nicks to the chromework.
That said, the MFA platform has four-wheel drive capability, and we hear that production QX30s will offer 4wd. Expect the engine line-up to reflect the A-class’s.
If you remove the 21″ alloy rims, the lightweight carbon fibre body and the Infiniti QX30 production crossover is very close and this looks pretty close to what we’ll see being built in Nissan’s Sunderland factory from 2016.
The modern Infiniti vibe is alive and well here: the swooping creases down the flanks, the ‘blade’-style roofrails and slimline lamps. Sadly, only this rear three-quarters view has been released so far.
The rest of the QX30 story should become apparent at its Geneva Motor Show world debut in March 2015.
