THOUSANDS of Kisumu City residents were today morning sent into a state of panic after two suit cases suspected to have contained bomb were found abandoned at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground.
POLICE OFFICERS IN KISUMU CHECK THE REMAINS WHICH WERE CONTAINED IN TWO BAGS FOUND ABANDONED AT JOMO KENYATTA SPORTS GROUND. THE BAGS WERE SUSPECTED TO HAVE BOMBS BUT POLICE CONFIRMED THAT THERE WERE NO BOMBS
Following the incident, anti-Terror police Unit cordoned off the area and Bomb experts were called in.
A number of residents who were moving in and out of town got scared and rushed to the venue where the two bags were left.
Kisumu Central OCPD Musa Kongoli led a team of high powered contingent of Police officers comprising the Regular and Administration together with their Anti-Terror counterparts.
The Anti-Terror Police Officers few minutes so as to detonate the content of what was inside the two suit cases one black and the other red.
The residents who visited the scene get so scared during the detonation and a number of them lied down to the ground flat with their bellies which the area police commended and said they should behave in such like a manner at all the time when there is such a call.
After the exercise, the Anti-Terror Police Confirmed that the contents into the two bags were not bombs.
They tried to check the two bags but did not find any bomb and only cloths which get burnt were recovered.
Kisumu Central OCPD Musa Kongoli who addressed the press at the scene said they had received information from a member of the Public that two people had abandoned the two bags within Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground.
He said police took quick action by visiting the scene so as to assess the situation, adding that Bomb experts were called in to help in detonation.
He added that there was no bomb found at the scene, adding that only charred cloths were found in the two bags which were badly torn after the exercise.
He has urged the members of the public to be highly alert especially at this time when the issue of terror attacks across the country.
The Police Boss urged the Public to report any suspicious looking character within their vicinity, adding that there is need not to take chances with their lives especially at this time when there is a serious threat of terrorism attack from suspected Al-Shabaab militants.
Following the incident, security was seen heightened across various places within the Lake Side City including Malls and other place where people normally frequent.
