Milimani Ward Rep Edwin Anayo has today become the 19th person within the Varsity Riders Group to receive a motorbike to start a transport business.
According to the Group Coordinator, Patrick Abuti, the group was started early last year with an aim of buying its members motorbikes as a way of creating employment for the youth without fully relying on the government, noting that the group has already created job opportunities for 18 people, Anayo being the 19th. As every day the group members who have not received motorbikes are mandated to contribute Sh. 150 as those who have already received make a contribution of Sh. 300.
Speaking to Kisumu News, the Milimani Ward Rep Edwin Anayo said he joined the group last year as a way of motivating the youths that anyone can prosper by putting their funds together in a consummated account and becoming their own employers. He further added that the group allows one to buy their own motorbikes, since bodaboda operators are the major shareholders within the transport sector in Kisumu County.
Mr Abuti however said, the group faces a lot of payments challenges from its members especially after awarding some of them motorbikes and this makes it hard for the rest of the members to benefit from the group’s initiative. Mr. Abuti was also quick to note that the said members start cooperating due to the group’s terms and conditions.
Both Anayo and Abuti have further urged the youths to be hopeful, respectful and willing to take the risk of investing and working together with each other for their own personal and economic independence.
The Kisumu MCA, Hon. Philip Edwin Anayo joined Varsity Riders Group to encourage the members of the group and other youth to be self reliant and to run their own businesses, irrespective of the kind of job they are doing. He encouraged youth to appreciate the opportunities they receive and shun the attitude of disrespecting jobs which they feel are “menial” as compared to white collar office jobs. Bodaboda operators are marked as one of the major economy drivers in Kenya with over 10, 000 bikes monthly in Kisumu, and continued growth since the Kibaki government zero-rated tax on motor cycles.
