County Commisioner warned the area resident of Kisumu County to move to higher grounds to evade being submerged into the floods during this rainy seasons
The rainy seasons have started in most parts of the country and Kisumu County have been in the headlines on how they are affected by floods in many areas of the county.
We want our people in Nyando and Nyakach to move to higher grounds before the areas are submerged into the waters
Speaking to Kisumu News, Kisumu County Commissioner Mrs. Lorna Odero said that flood is a natural disaster and so people should be always ready to deal with the situation before it interferes with their way of life.
Let’s don’t wait until it’s too late to move to safer places, we as the security agency we are ready to deal with the water disaster in the way it will come so we are very much concern with our peoples lifesaid Lorna
She urged the residents not to wait until their houses are moved by floods but to take an early action and move to high areas for safety.
Mrs. Lorna said that the government is on high alert to save its people from being affected by floods.
As much as we are ready to help them during the floods, we want everybody to lead by securing their lives
The floods comes after many parts of the country experience heavy rainfall in April which continues through to the end of May.
The areas that are most prone to flood disasters are the Lake Victoria Basin, with the flood waters arising from the Cherangani Hills and the Kano Plain Floods along the Nyando River with the flood waters arising from the Nandi Hills.
The Nyando River Basin covers an area of 3500 square kilometers in Western Kenya. About 750,000 persons reside within the Nyando Basin, most of whom live in Nyando District of Kisumu County.
The catchment has a steep gradient upstream but a gentle one downstream in the Kano plains where the river dissipates in a wetland area and finally discharges into the Nyakach Bay, Lake Victoria. Over 5,000 people are affected every year by floods.
This generally happens during the long and short rains, especially after spells of intense and heavy rainfalls in the catchments of the rivers where the annual rainfall is high and it is this rain that causes the most devastating of the floods in the basin.
