Over 500 Non-Governmental Organizations countrywide are at a risk of deregistration by the national NGO Coordination Board for non-compliance.
The Board has given a 14 day notice to all the affected NGO’s of the intended cancellation of their registration certificates for operation.
Executive Director of NGO Coordination Board Dr Hezron Obewa says provisions of section 16 of the NGOs Co-ordination Act mandates the Board to cancel such certificates of registrations.
Obewa says a total of 543 NGO’s have failed to submit their Annual Reports which is contrary to Regulation 24 of the NGO’s Coordination Regulations of 1992.
He says the notice of cancellation was issued on 29th April this year adding that reference should be made to the NGO’s website for the full list of the names of those targeted.
He says the regulation mandates every registered organization to furnish the Board on or before 31st May each year with their annual reports something which most of them have ignored.
The director says the board has established that among some of the 543 NGOs are briefcase and operating without offices.
He says as part of its mandate to register, coordinate and facilitate the work of all national and international NGOs operating in Kenya, the Board will not relent to ensure the sector is streamlined.
Section 24 of the NGOs Co-ordination Regulations of 1992 requires them to submits their reports before May 31st which they have not.
The section parts states every registered organization shall furnish to the Board on or before the 31st May in each year’s annual reports in which is set out in the First Scheduled and are well in their Terms and Conditions attached to their Certificates of Registration.
