World Vision has spent Sh. 45 million to drill and construct six solar powered boreholes in Nyakach Constituency to benefit over 18,000 families.
The program manager Pius Akumu said some of the boreholes were drilled two years ago but could not provide water to the locals due to lack of electricity.
It’s very unfortunate that these boreholes like Oremo and Kandiege were skunked two years ago and we have been waiting for power to come and this did not come forth, and for the last one year we have been thinking on how best we can able to make this major project that we have done as world vision to benefit the community and fully transform children’s life, said Pius Ochieng Program officer World Vision.
He said World Vision opted to buy solar panels to help in pumping the water for distribution through pipes to the locals which had been laid in the ground sometimes back.
He told the community that the clean, treated water is within their right to get and that they are out to give what will be of benefit to the locals in domestic and agricultural use.
Speaking during a visit of the six boreholes a head of the official launch by the national head of World Vision, Akumu lamented that the boreholes have managed to reduce water shortages caused by erratic rainfall in the area.
He said that the solar panels which have been provided are very much sustainable in the village compared to the electricity that would require maintenance cost and bills to be paid to the Kenya Power and Lightening while as oppose to solar.
Kisumu County Executive Member for Water Prof. Barack Abonyo who was in the in the company of the Programme Officer during the visit of the solar powered engineered bore holes promised that County Government will also stretch its muscle to pump more resources in the sector.
Abonyo said Governor Jack Ranguma will be present during the launch of the boreholes early next month to show the commitment of the county government towards water provision to its residents.
He said the county government has allocated in the current financial year a lot of funds towards water in Nyakach Constituency that will supplements what the None -Governmental Organizations’ are doing in the area.
