A United Millers driver, who seriously injured a renowned investigative Journalist in the lake side city during an accident on February 7 has been charged with reckless driving.
The accused person Paul Ngigi was arraigned in court and appeared before Kisumu Principal Magistrate Thomas Obutu.
The Court heard that on February 7,2015 while driving a motor vehicle with a registration Number KAP 432W without due care and attention failed to keep on his lane and knocked vehicle KBQ 844N causing serious injuries to one Dickens Ochieng’ Wasonga.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was released on KES. 50,000 bond; the case will be heard on May 27, this year.
The accused took almost one month for police offices to arrest and charge him before the court of law and when they did he was released on cash bail.
Police Officer privy to this said that the accused United Millers driver was at large and they did all they could to arrest him so that he can answer to charges facing him against Dickens Wasonga.
Wasonga who is the Country Representative of Africa Press International (API), suffered severe injuries on the fateful day after his car involved in a collision with the lorry along Kisumu – Kakamega Road near the Junction to Migosi Estate.
The vehicle hit by the lorry was written off, while the lorry’s destructive run was stopped by a tree post planted along the road side.
On the fateful day Wasonga was driving from his Mamboleo home along Kisumu – Kakamega Road heading to town while the lorry belonging to United Millers Limited was coming from the opposite direction causing the accident.
According to Dickens, the United Millers lorry driver attempted to overtake another car near Mamboleo Bridge before smashing into his car.
Dickens says that he was rescued by police officers stationed at Mamboleo roadblock who rushed him to Avenue Hospital opposite Kibuye Market.
The Senior Investigative Reporter said that the accident interfered with his skull and his recent Computerized Tomography Scan (CT Scan) revealed that some serious damage was caused calling for an immediate operation.
The former Standard Media Reporter is currently recuperating at his Mamboleo home with frequent visits to hospital for check ups.
