The US Agency for International Development has promised to continue improving access to safe water and improved sanitation in low income areas within Kisumu County.
The Agency mission director for Kenya, Karen Freeman says their main aim is to ensure pro-poor and communities have access to clean and affordable water.
Speaking in Kisumu when she presided over the commissioning of Nyamasaria Water System funded by USAID to serve 16,000 people, Freeman says the county will not be able to realize sustainable development without access to water to its people.
Freeman says lack of clean water has led to water related deaths and most of those deaths are preventable.
She says USAID helped Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company to develop a feasibility plan and financing worth KES. 20.1 million to construct small pipe infrastructure to the low income settlement of Nyamasaria.
Freeman says the water system project introduces innovative payment terms that make water connections affordable for everyone.
The commissioning was attended by Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma who promised to increase funding to address water scarcity in other parts of the county.
